Pleasant Hill Elementary School PTO Meeting Tuesday, September 11th
Meeting called to order by Kim Smith, President Time: 6:35 pm Attendance: 15
Introductions are made around the room.
OFFICERS REPORTS: President: KIM SMITH The Board members met in August to discuss this year’s goals. There will be two primary goals: Implement better checks and balances when dealing with money and other financial matters. There are new deposit slips and check request forms that will require two people be present and sign their names. We will be getting a safety deposit box at Community State Bank at a cost of $55 a year to hold tax papers and other important documents. Documentation of all PTO special events and activities. There is no official documentation of our events and it makes it very difficult to pass on information to the next committee chair. All current committee leaders will be asked to document their event with instructions, timelines, and any other pertinent information. Hired an accountant to fix the tax returns. Still waiting on news as to if there will be a fine on this issue. Nanny2shoes (a professional) is hired for childcare for every meeting so parents feel they can come to the meetings without worrying.
Vice President: JENNIFER BRAFFHART No forum
Treasurer: MICHELLE BODENSTEINER
Treasures report was read by all and approved by Donna Britt and Seconded by Melanie Kale
The layout of the reports changed for easier understanding.
Buses expense changed from one flat rate to by the hour.
5th grade party—looks like $1000 is being given to them but PTO will give $200. The class pictures fundraiser will pay the rest. Terri Price commented on fundraising and how important it is and thanked the PTO for all the hard work.
Secretary: CORRI KENDALL
Minutes from May’s meeting was read by all and approved by Donna Britt and seconded by Sheila Warrick.
Flowers were sent to Monica (new P.E. teacher) after her surgery. She sent a thank you and it was read aloud. The Pleasant Hill Fire Department also sent a thank you for the $100 contribution from the Ice Cream Social.
Principal: TERRIE PRICE
Kids are greeted every morning with handshakes and good mornings from Mrs. Price and Mrs. Helt. Helps start the day off on a good note. Staff also will get to attend a seminar with Ron Clark who is a speaker with great ideas for how to get kids involved and such.
There are 3 second grades this year because the kids are learning to read more and it is crucial for the smaller class size.
New reading series this year. All brand new books and the teachers are smiling about it.
Requests;
*CD players needed to support the new reading series *Soccer goals outside for the playground *Trash can in front of the building *More computers in the lab *An ELMO which is an overhead projector *Ball rack and more playground balls
Due to 5th graders having to be pulled from Math to wipe lunchroom tables, every grade will now wipe their own tables. Adventureland passes will still be offered to 5th graders for helping or other activities.
Box Top competition is still going on. The class with the most gets a party.
Student Ambassadors: Someone who greets and welcomes visitors to the school or helps give information to people who need it. Students had to fill out applications and give references. It is based on good behavior and citizenship. Terrie Price is going through applications and will “hire” students soon.
Student Council: one or two students from each class will be selected to discuss and improve issues in the classrooms and work on ideas such as “Red Ribbon Week”.
Pleasant Hill Elementary is not schedules to be totally renovated but can choose 1 to 4 things that we would like to see improved. Some suggestions:
*All purpose room—( Gym or Cafeteria) *Add on addition for the preschool because preschool should be allowed to be “loud” *Added bathroom space *Ventilation *Sky lights for more natural sunlight and fresh air *Added classroom space *Handicapped accessibility
PBS (positive behavioral program): Good communication with parents when needed to reinforce good behavior and appropriate punishment for misbehaving.
Food Services and Mrs. Price are communicating on the “chicken Nugget Deboggle” Lunches (especially for the 3rd grade) are shorted due to some students not understanding that they should take only what they will eat or ordered. Will be monitored more closely from now on.
Jennifer and Terrie will both call Allied for contribution for the CD players needed in the reading department. Jennifer will also contact Scholastic and see what they offer in that line.
We have 21 computers in the lab and would like to have a few more so the bigger classes don’t have to share. Research will be done to determine how many and if electricity will support that.
OPEN FORUM: Jennifer ordered 3 new benches to replace the two we have now and put one down by the track. They should arrive soon. They will be purple to match the equipment we have now.
Research is there is a grant from Metro Waste will be for garbage cans outside.
Dawn Anderson brought up that the recycling bin for pop cans in the teachers lounge should be gone through and the POP TOPS should be saved. A sign would maybe help everyone who uses it remember to save those for our school.
We have all the books needed for battle of the books. Mrs. Jennings will request more if she needs them.
OLD BUISNESS
School supplies—we had 24 students out of 306 order school supply boxes this year. Discussed whether or not we should continue to do this next year. Students might keep things from the previous year such as headphones and such and may not need the entire box? Will decide at a later meeting.
Extra school supplies were purchased and available to kids or teachers who need them.
Open House/Book Fair/Ice Cream Social: Discussion on whether to keep these all on the same night as “meet the teacher” night or move the dates to later. Allied holds a bookfair in November and it might be more profitable to do it then. Will vote at a later meeting.
Treasure Dig: was fun for the kids and we would like to do it again next year. We made $200 but will not expect to do that next year as we had left over supplies from last year. This is not a fundraiser but it is to be a part of the community. Big thanks should go out to the Parks and Recreation Department for donating the sand and the time to help us.
Fun Night: Huge Success!! The kids really liked the Animal theme this year. Talked of raising the budget a bit to cover the cost. This is our one huge fun school function that everyone seems to enjoy. We need more volunteers to make it even better. Special thanks to Kim Smith, Corri Kendall, Michelle Bodensteiner, Jennifer Braffhart and Terrie Price. Thanks to all the volunteers as well. Jennifer sold over $400 in raffle tickets for the class baskets.
Walkathon update: As of right now we have $644 in pledges, $480 in t-shirt sales, $1100 in sponsors, and $400 in class baskets. Over $2000 so far. Tee-shirt orders will be in on Thursday Sept. 20th. Party Time Fundraiser: Kickoff will be October 10th at 1:10 pm with an assembly in the gym. We will have 3 catalogs to choose from and the orders will be back in December 4th. September 21st is the start date on the new sidewalk from the back door to Pleasant Hill Blvd. This will make it safer for the kids to load in the afternoon. NEW BUSINESS Quizno’s Night will be Thursday September 13th from 5 pm to 8pm at the Pleasant Hill Quizno’s. We will receive 10% of all the sales. Cookies will be awarded to the class with the most participation. Yearbook: Andrea and Leigh have asked to keep taking pictures for the yearbook. Also if anyone has any pictures, send them to Leigh and she will post them on the website. Red ribbon week: Mrs. Helt thanked everyone for the Camp Dodge trip for 5th grade. They enjoyed it. Also requesting extra money for the planting of red tulips to be planted now and bloom in the spring. Student council will discuss and everyday activity regarding “red ribbon week”.
