2007 Battle of the Books
Some Pleasant Hill students participated in the first round competition in the Battle of the Book on March 14th. Seven teams from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade took part in the reading battle this year. These students were asked questions over the 40 books that they have been reading during this school year. Each team worked cooperatively to correctly answer all the questions and identify all the authors of the books. The regional competition will take place on March 29,2007, at Hoyt Middle School. They will compete against teams from nine other Des Moines elementary schools. The winner of this competition will go to the state competition.
The winning team members representing Pleasant Hill this year are: Jillian Carlson, Madison Clark, Sydney Ellis, Meredith Fillman, Kalyx Heuermann, and Sabrina Relph.
The scores were very close and each team did an outstanding job. The other teams were as follows:

Battle
of the Books is a reading program designed to encourage children to read
and to give recognition to those who do like to read. We form teams of 4
to 6 students and an adult team manager. These teams will read books
from the Battle of the Books list for that year.
In March the teams will engage in “battles” by answering questions about the books they have read. One team from Pleasant Hill will win first place and continue on to regional competition and the winner of this will compete in the district wide championship. Pleasant Hill has sent teams to the District Battle of the Books Championship several times. We were District Champs in 2005!
Pleasant Hill has been well represented by our strong student readers and I know we have the potential to enjoy another winning year. In this competition although there are winning teams we believe everyone in the program is a winner.
Having a copy of each book on the list will give the Pleasant Hill students the best opportunity to compete, and to continue to excel as we have done in the past! Unfortunately, there are many books on the list that we do not yet have in our library. If you would be interested in sponsoring a book from the list below, please print and complete the form below, and return to school with a check payable to Pleasant Hill PTO.
Upon completion of the competition, the books will go to our school's library for all students to enjoy!
