   Nancy Jennings, Third Grade

I have three children and eight grandchildren. I live in Carlisle and have been driving to Pleasant Hill to teach in the greatest elementary school for 32 years.

I grew up in Guthrie Center, Iowa.  I lived in a large white house with a big yard.  Our garage was an old barn that was big enough to hold lots of old stuff and had plenty of room to make club houses, play houses, forts what ever we wanted it to be.

As a child, did you have pets? Were any special to you?
We had a black dog named Bootsie; he was very special to all of us.

What did you enjoy doing as a child? What was your favorite outdoor activity?
I grew up in a neighborhood full kids. We played outside most of the time, we played games like: Annie, Annie Over, Steal Stick, Tag, Red Rover, kickball, softball, and when it got dark we played night games like who's afraid of the big bad wolf, 10 steps, hide-n-seek.  During the summer we went swimming everyday, usually twice a day.   I also liked to read, and play games like Sorry, Checkers, and card games with my brothers.

Describe you parents. What were they like? What did they do?
My parents were two of the greatest people I've ever known.  My dad, Glenn Hunerdosse, was a high school math teacher for many years, then became the high school principal.  (Yes, he was both my geometry teacher and my principal when I was in high school.)  He was always very busy but would always be at all of our activities and helped me whenever I asked.  I remember he always helped me with my spelling, I couldn't spell then and I still can't today!

My mom, Elsie Hunerdosse, stayed home and took care of everything. She was a great cook.  All the neighborhood kids would love it when they saw the " fryer" on the porch, that meant she was making doughnuts and you would have to eat them when they were warm or they were just no good.

Describe your grandparents. What did you enjoy the most about them?
Grandpa and Grandma Hunerdosse lived on a farm and when we went there usually some my "20 some"  cousins would be there too.  We enjoyed playing in the barn, exploring the pastures and playing all kinds of games.

Who were some of your friends growing up and did your parents like them?
I am still close friends with some of the kids I grew up with. Our house was kind off the place where we would meet and "hang-out". My brother, Gary, was a year younger than I was.  We had many of the same friends so had a large group of kids that did many things together.  Yes, my parents liked and remained friends with many of the kids I grew up with.

What were some of your first jobs?
Babysitting was probably my first job. In high school I worked in an office on Saturday mornings doing filing.  I was a lifeguard and swimming instructor at the Guthrie Center pool. During college I spent my summers working at Glen  View Country Club near Chicago.

What did you like to do in your free time? What do you do now?
Read!!!!!!  Spend time with friends.  Travel.  Shop. Now, I like to read, spend time with friends, travel, and shop (especially at flea markets).

What were some of the crazy fads you or your friends went through?
Hooking gum wrappers together to make long chains and jump rope games.

What great historical events you have experienced in your lifetime?
The assassinations of John Kennedy and Martin Luther King, the Viet Nam War,  man walking on the moon.

What is something that you are really proud of and why?
My education, I worked hard to get it.

What are the goals you are still working toward?
Always trying to improve myself as a teacher, a learner, a mom, a friend, and a person so people will be glad I am around.
