Mary Helt, Counselor
I was born, raised, and attended schools in
Des Moines. I graduated
from Drake University with a Bachelor’s degree to teach elementary school
and a Master’s degree to serve as a counselor. I taught primary grades for
twenty years and taught guidance classes and counseled for over fifteen. I
enjoy working at Pleasant Hill School very much.
My parents are still living in their house in
Des Moines. My daughters are all grown.
The oldest is a nurse who works in the
pediatric intensive care unit at Mercy and
is married to a former teacher. She has
triplet girls who will be four years old
soon—you can see them at
www.lenhartfamily.blogspot.com. My second
daughter completed a Master’s degree in
Urban Planning at UCLA and returned in
August from an Internship in Shanghai,
China, where they were enlarging an
airport. My third daughter spent two years
in New York and now has returned to the
University of Iowa to finish her degree in
Theater Arts.
I like to travel and have been in every state at least once,
as well as most provinces and territories of
Canada. I have made short trips to Europe,
South America, and Africa. I usually camp,
stay at hostels, or stay with friends. I
like to learn about history, people,
geography, and how places and people are
alike and different. I like to learn about
their foods, schools, weather, and
interests. I like to read. I like space
exploration and science fiction. Twenty
years ago, I applied to be the first teacher
in space, on the space shuttle.
(Fortunately, I wasn’t chosen because it
crashed!)
I like to knit, crochet, tat, sew, and make things. I like
to make things with children and learn as we
are doing something. I like gardening and
being outside. I believe in active learning
and having respect for everyone; I am proud
of the adults and young people I know who
strive to make a better world.
