Donna Britt, First
Grade
Hi! My name is Donna
M. Britt. I was born and raised in Des Moines. My father was a
physical education teacher for the Des Moines Public Schools
for 28 years at Washington Irving Junior High School. My
mother taught kindergarten for 13 years at Woodside Elementary
School. I attended All Saints School from kindergarten to mid
2nd grade. At that point my parents moved over by
Hoover High School, so I went to Holy Trinity School until 8th
grade. After that I went to Dowling (St. Joseph Academy) for
my high school years. I graduated 3rd in my class
of 500 and then went on to Grand View College where I
completed my Associates of Arts Degree and also my Three Year
Degree. From there I transferred to Drake University, did my
student teaching in kindergarten at Oak Park, and then
finished my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. I was
hired by the Des Moines Public Schools in May, 1975. I
received my assignment to Pleasant Hill shortly thereafter. I
have been teaching 1st grade at Pleasant Hill ever
since! I have just started my 31st year. I also
have my Master of Science in Education – Curriculum and
Instruction from Drake University and hold a Permanent
Professional License from the State of Iowa. I was a January,
2004, Eyewitness News “Favorite Teacher” award winner
(Thanks to Marcy Stone and family!).
I
am married to Det. Sgt. John A. Britt from the Pleasant Hill
Police Department and have two grown stepsons – Tony and
Ryan. John and I have two wonderful dogs – Lady (a terrier
mix) and Rowdy (a Dalmatian). My mother still lives in our family home and helps me with all
my constant school jobs of cutting out lamination and
assembling “little books”. I have one younger brother who
also lives in the Des Moines area.
In
my free time (which is very little!), I own and run R &
R Towing plus I am a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Polk
County. I love to exercise and work out at Curves in
Johnston. I also play guitar and sing at the 11:15 Mass each
Sunday at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church. My newest
interest is Nascar racing. John and I have attended races at
Michigan and Kansas City. My favorite drivers are Dale Jarrett
(#88) and Kenny Wallace (#22). We have made many new friends
from all over and reacquainted with some old friends and
students from the past. Everything I do, I believe, makes me a
better teacher for my students who I believe are the best in
the world!
