Tidbits from the Child Abuse Prevention Council

The Council participated in Kidsfest again this year. Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers who helped staff the booth with a special thanks going out to Roxanne and Kevin Riesberg for building the game for Kidsfest!

Parenting Classes, HOPE! Drama Troupe, and the Multi-Disciplinary Team have had busy schedules and continue to be well received.

Planning for the 2009 Annual Auction has already begun. The venue has been changed to Embassy Suites due to remodeling at our previous location. The Auction Committee met this week to view the room and discuss the agenda. There is a lot to be done between now and November- if you would like to get involved feel free to contact the council office and let us know how you would like to help. Look for your invitation early fall!

Membership letters went out in December. If you haven't yet renewed your membership you can do so by sending a check for $25 etc to CAPC at 2309 Euclid Ave., Des Moines 50310.

We also want to express our gratitude to Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino for awarding the Child Abuse Prevention Council a $9,000 grant for HOPE! Drama Troupe. Thank You to Prairie Meadows for the support!!

Light of Hope Event

Light of Hope

The Light of Hope started in 2000 as a national movement designed to provide hope for abused and neglected children and to recognize the extraordinary efforts of individuals whose light shines on these children. April is National Child Abuse Prevention month, dedicated to the many children who live with abuse and neglect. During the month of April, hundreds of communities across the US will come together at Light of Hope Events to honor the promise of remembering the plight of America's abused, abandoned, and neglected children.

The Child Abuse Prevention Council, Blank Children's Hospital, and CASA invite you to attend the Light of Hope Event at Blank Children's Hospital- Hill Auditorium on April 16, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.

Special thanks to Elevate, Heartland Youth Choir, and HOPE! Drama Troupe for their participation in this very special event!

NEWs for Parents for winter!!

Welcome Letter:

                  October 2008

Des Moines Public Schools Guidance and Counseling Program provides opportunities for all students to become better citizens through a curriculum which provides lessons on study skills, friendship skills, violence prevention, transition and change, personal safety, and understanding diversity.  Counselors teach guidance lessons in the classrooms, take small groups to work on specific skills, and work with individuals.  There is not enough time for intense individual therapy, but there are opportunities to work on skills and to solve problems.

The counselor can be a friend and ally to parents and teachers, as well as students.  If something concerns you or is troubling your child, such as your family’s dog dying or difficulty with getting organized, or fearing a bully, or some life change, your child needs help to solve the problem.   We can work together on solutions.

Please feel free to call your Pleasant Hill counselor, Mary Freimuth Helt at the school number 242-8432.  Counselors spend much of the time in the classroom or with students, but, if you leave a message, your call will be returned as soon as possible.

At Pleasant Hill Elementary School, we believe all children (and adults) have the right to be treated with respect, equality, fairness, and dignity.  We expect people to behave as citizens of good character.  We believe every child deserves opportunities to become the best person possible.  We want open communication with school and home.  Please remember your school counselor is a resource available to you and your family.  We can be a team!

People ask what the counselor does: about 35-45 % of time is spent in guidance curriculum (teaching), 5-10% is with individuals in planning (working on solving problems or planning for the future), 30-40% is spent with responsive services (crisis or immediate need),  and 10-15% is involved in system support (consultation, research, and planning with staff, parents, and/or community resources.)

At Pleasant Hill School, we want to create a place where students believe---

I am safe.

People care about me.

People help me.

People want good things for me.

I can learn.

I can make good choices.

I can feel good.

I can help make this a good place to learn and live.

From your Pleasant Hill School Counselor,

Mary Freimuth Helt
