Pleasant
Hill Blue Star Program
Introduction
Purpose
The emphasis of
the program is a bright Blue Star placed
in a lower right corner of a window, so
as to be seen easily from the street or
sidewalk. The Blue Star tells
youngsters that they may go to this
house for help in case of any
emergency. The core of the program
is citizens, like you, offering an open
door to a child in distress. If
he/she is a lost child, one who is
injured, in danger of abuse,
molestation, or frightened for any
reason, real or imagined, he/she may
seek the safety of a Blue Star
House. This is part of a
nationwide program developed so children
may safely travel to and from school, or
at other times, and be able to seek help
immediately.
Responsibilities
You, as a parent,
are responsible for teaching your child
many safety measures such as the safe
route to and from school, crossing
streets safely, and knowing where the
Blue Star Homes are located. The
Pleasant Hill Police Department will
supplement your safety instruction
through safety education talks at our
elementary school.
Is this a
sound program? YES! The
program is carefully coordinated by the
Pleasant Hill Police Department, working
with school groups and parents to make
our community safe for all
citizens. In other cities where
similar programs have been in effect,
crimes have decreased. The Blue
Star Home is also valuable to our
children in the summertime while they
are on vacation. Emergencies are
more apt to be minor in nature, but any
Blue Star Parent would rather be
contacted for a minor incident than a
genuine distress call. The less
activity, the better the job is being
done.
Regulations
Regulations have
been established for all Blue Star
Homes. The following procedures have
been developed for the safety and
protection of your children:
 |
Each
applicant must agree to a background
check performed by the Police
Department. |
 |
We
ask of each Blue Star Parent that
they be home during the hours that
children are going to and from
school. |
 |
Blue
Star House Parents must understand
that they have no official
capacity. They are volunteers
cooperating with the Pleasant Hill
Police Department to provide an
efficient form of relaying
information to cut down on
neighborhood crime. |
 |
A
close check will be kept on the Blue
Stars by the Police Department and
our local school to avoid the
appearance of an unauthorized or
inappropriately used star. |
 |
The
Blue Star card must be turned into
the Pleasant Hill Police Department
when you are moving, when you can no
longer participate in the program,
or upon request of the Pleasant Hill
Police Department. |

"A
child is a person who is going to carry
on what you have started. He is
going to sit where you are sitting and
when you are gone, attend to those
things which you think are
important. You may adopt all the
policies you please, but how they are
carried out depends on him. He
will assume control of your cities,
states, and nations. He is going
to move in and take over your churches,
schools, universities and
corporations...The fate of humanity is
in his hands."
- Abraham Lincoln
